Brian Tan
Brian is a Partner in the Private Client Department. Brian has over 11 years experience in all aspects of wills, trusts, probate and elderly client services and is a member of STEP.
Experience
As a fully qualified STEP (Society of Trust and Estates Practitioners) member, the world’s leading organisation for private wealth professionals, Brian specialises in succession planning and administration of deceased persons’ estates (Probate), with a particular focus on complex, high value estates and all aspects of Inheritance Tax.
Brian acts for executors, administrators, trustees and individuals seeking to plan their lifetime affairs. Brian's matters vary from advising busy high net worth individuals to those who have recently lost a loved one and at their most vulnerable. Brian understands the need to be able to give clear advice in a comprehensive, and sometimes sensitive manner. Brian aids his clients through the legal and tax complexities (inheritance and certain other taxes) arising during a lifetime and particularly upon death.
Recent Highlights
Brian acts for executors in administration of complex estates encompassing both contentious and non-contentions issues.
Brian has dealt with the administration of a complex intestate estate including the tracing of missing beneficiaries.
Brian has successfully negotiated with HM Revenue and Customs Valuation Office to a complicated query relating to valuation of property resulting in substantial saving of additional inheritance tax.
Brian has also advised on a complex estate following the death of a successful local entrepreneur. Brian negotiated with HM Revenue and Customs on a number of complex issues, including the status of gifts made prior to death and business property relief claims.
Brian has provided his expertise on a complex estate which involves cross-border elements, including successful negotiation with HM Revenue and Customs to obtain a Grant on Credit.
Membership
Brian currently sits on the Board of Trustees for Advocacy Now (formerly Advocacy for Older People in Greenwich), a charity which runs a citizen advocacy project where trained volunteer advocates and co-ordinating staff help older people to make informed choices about their own care needs and work to enhance the lives of people who are often socially isolated and vulnerable.
Brian is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners.
Outside of work
Brian enjoys playing the piano in his spare time and is particularly keen on classical pieces, especially Beethoven and Schubert.
